Academic Research

My research spans the fields of media industries, media audiences, and organizational communication. I am interested in the audience measurement industry and the changing ways that media industries, especially television and streaming, use audience data. Additionally, I have been involved in research on online gaming through a research partnership with the developer of the game World of Tanks.

My dissertation, titled “The Data Dilemma: Sensemaking and Cultures of Research in the Media Industries,” explores data use in media organizations and how research and data workers in these organizations solve data problems. I conducted my research in partnership with two media publishers and two data companies. My dissertation first explores the ways that research teams work together to come up with creative and innovative data solutions to changes in the industries. This includes an analysis of organizational culture and organizational responses to change. Second, my dissertation explores the ways that changes in these industries are creating new digital divides. I defended my dissertation in May 2022.

I have experience with the following research methods:

  • Fieldwork, including interviews
  • Survey design and analysis
  • Focus groups
  • Experiments
