Teaching and Academic Work

I have had various academic work experiences, including teaching, mentoring, and editing. I taught one standalone course in Public Speaking as an instructor of record. This means that I was in charge of all aspects of the course, including writing the syllabus, teaching, and grading. Also, I worked three semesters as a Teaching Assistant for a course on media economics. This class involved teaching students basic microeconomics and the specifics of the film, television, music, internet, gaming, advertising, and publishing industries.

I extended my experience working with students by working at the USC Writing Center and by participating in USC Annenberg’s Graduate-Undergraduate Mentorship program. At the Writing Center, I worked as a Consultant for a year, helping dozens of students one-on-one with specific writing problems. As a Mentorship fellow, I helped an undergraduate honors thesis student during his senior thesis writing process.

Finally, I worked for three semesters as a Assistant Editor of the International Journal of Communication, assisting the Managing Editor in screening submitted research articles for further review and in assigning reviewers.

For a full list of all my teaching, mentoring, and other academic work, please see the list below.

Sample Student Reviews:

This is my favorite class I take! It’s extremely interactive and I think Professor Jonckheere does a great job at keeping everyone informed of what to do.

“All of the assignments were structured around writing, organizing, and presenting speeches. By consistently being asked to exercise and present these skills– I found I became much more comfortable and confident with public speaking. I got a lot out of this course.”

Teaching Assistant (Discussion Section Leader):

Communication and Media Economics (undergraduate): Fall 2020, Spring 2021, Spring 2022

Responsibilities: leading discussion sections, grading all assignments, and holding office hours

Sample Student Reviews:

“Natalie, I do not usually enjoy my discussion sections (or think they are necessary), but you changed my opinion on this! Even though it was at 9 AM, I was always excited to get to your section and learn something new. I loved the conversations we had in class– they are so current and interesting!” (Spring 2022)

“Natalie was super helpful, knowledgeable and attentive when it came to leading discussions and approaching her for any questions. She was very organized and always encouraged us to do our best and ask questions. I enjoyed this discussion!” (Spring 2022)

“I really enjoyed the discussion session. I always found it as a productive time to go over broader topics of what was gone over in class so I really understood what we were learning. I think Natalie did a really good job breaking things down and keeping everyone engaged.” (Spring 2021)

“Natalie was great, I liked how she provided multiple ways to participate and genuinely encourage us to understand the course concepts.” (Spring 2021)
